How to Open a Bank Account in Portugal

A Portuguese account is the piece that makes the rest of your setup work: salaries, rent, direct debits, MB Way. The process is bureaucratic but honest — banks mostly want the same things, and knowing the script beforehand removes most of the friction. This walkthrough is the first stop on the map of banking for newcomers.
No NIF, no account — the tax number is the non-negotiable ingredient, asked for by every bank as a general rule. If you do not have one yet, pause here and fix that first; our sister site NIF, explained covers the process in English. Everything else in this article assumes that number exists.
The typical request: identification (passport or national ID), your NIF, proof of address, and something about your situation — a work contract, proof of studies, or proof of income. The exact list varies by bank and changes over time; each bank publishes its requirements, and the branch will tell you precisely what is missing from your set. Non-residents can generally open accounts too, sometimes under specific non-resident account types with their own conditions — ask, rather than assuming the door is closed.
Newcomers default to the branch nearest the flat, which is how people end up paying maintenance fees for years out of inertia. Before applying anywhere, spend an evening with the method in how to compare accounts: the mandatory price list, the fee structure for how you use money, the digital experience. Shortlist two or three, then apply. Some banks open accounts fully online, including for people not yet in the country; the availability and conditions of remote opening change often enough that you should check the current state directly.
Banks in Portugal, as across the EU, carry legal duties to know their customers: expect questions about where your money comes from, what you do, and why you want the account. This is not suspicion of you personally — it is the anti-money-laundering machinery doing its mandated job, supervised by Banco de Portugal. Answer plainly, bring evidence where you have it (contract, invoices), and do not take offence at questions that would be rude at a dinner party. Evasive answers, by contrast, are the one thing that genuinely stalls applications.
A bank can decline your application. What newcomers rarely know: Portuguese law provides a basic-services banking account mechanism ("serviços mínimos bancários") — a legal figure giving access to essential banking at a legally capped cost, with eligibility and conditions defined in the rules in force. If ordinary accounts keep saying no, learn the current shape of this mechanism from Banco de Portugal and invoke it explicitly. Once any account exists, the Multibanco system opens up, and daily life gets dramatically easier.
