How to Compare Bank Accounts in Portugal
Skip the listicles — the price list, five criteria and one honest evening beat any "best bank" ranking.

Because there is not one. Fees change, promotions expire, and the account that suits a salaried resident poorly suits a freelancer invoicing abroad. Worse, most rankings you will find are funded by the ranked. What survives all of that is method: Portuguese banks are legally required to publish a standardised price list — the preçário — and to report fee information within a supervisory framework overseen by Banco de Portugal, which also runs public comparison materials. The price list is where marketing goes to die; read it, and you know more than the listicle writers. That method-over-names stance is the founding principle of this whole site.
Total cost for your pattern. Not the headline maintenance fee — the sum of what you would pay: account maintenance, the card, the transfers you actually make, cash handling if you use cash. Waiver mechanisms are common (salary domiciliation, minimum balances, age brackets) and genuinely change the answer, so check what conditions kill which fees.
Digital experience. You will touch the app hundreds of times for every branch visit. If a bank's digital channels are clumsy, that friction is a recurring fee paid in time.
Language and support reality. Some banks handle non-Portuguese speakers gracefully, some do not; support quality when something breaks is worth more than a slightly cheaper card.
Fit for your life. Freelancers care about receiving foreign transfers cheaply; families care about joint accounts; frequent travellers care about card behaviour abroad — the transfer-cost mechanics are their own topic.
Shortlist three banks. Download each price list — every bank publishes one. For each, price out a month of your real life: maintenance, card, typical transfers, incoming foreign payment if that is your life. Check which waiver conditions you would genuinely meet. Skim the app store reviews for the banking app in your language. Then choose, and calendar a note to re-check in a year — conditions drift, and inertia is the most expensive product banks sell. If the winning account later disappoints, switching is more doable than it feels; the friction points to plan around are the direct debits and standing arrangements that accumulate on an old account.
