Banking in Portugal

Accounts, Multibanco, MB Way and fees — the system explained by someone with no commission to earn from your choice.

What this site is for

Every "best bank in Portugal" article you have read was probably written by someone with an affiliate link. This site is the other kind: we explain how Portuguese banking works — the account-opening process, the Multibanco network that makes this country unusually pleasant to pay in, the fee structures that make some accounts quietly expensive — and we teach you the criteria to choose with. No bank names, no product recommendations, no commissions. You, equipped with criteria and the banks' own mandatory price lists, will out-choose any listicle.

The honesty clause: fees, conditions and account rules change constantly and differ per bank. We describe the mechanisms — what a maintenance fee is, how the basic-services account works as a legal figure, what to look for in a price list — and for current numbers we send you to each bank's own published price list and to Banco de Portugal, the supervisor, whose materials explain what banks may and may not do.

You generally need

  • A NIF (Portuguese tax number) — banks will ask, full stop
  • Identification and, typically, proof of address and income or status
  • The bank's price list, read before you sign anything
  • An account that fits how you actually use money
  • Patience for compliance questions — they are normal here

You generally do NOT need

  • Residency already sorted — non-resident accounts exist as a general rule
  • The bank nearest your flat — proximity is the weakest criterion
  • Every add-on the branch offers with the account
  • A premium package to get everyday banking done
  • To accept fees silently — the price list is negotiable ground

Before any bank will talk to you, you need the tax number — our sister site NIF, explained exists for exactly that step.
